Remembering the Dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Remembering the Dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The first long weekend of the new year is on our doorstep. Martin Luther King Day, it is observed on the third monday of January each year, is a day of service, commemoration, and the broadening of horizons. All across the country, people will gather to honor the man who led the Civil Rights Movement.

If your resolution for this year was to make a difference in the world, this national holiday is the perfect way to start. Find a project in your community or register your own project so that volunteers can find it. Alternatively, you can attend one of the many celebrations going on around the United States. Here’s a taste of what some of the major US metropolitan areas have to offer:

Nationwide

Remembering the Dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

On Martin Luther King Day, all national parks and monuments will be offering free admission, meaning there’s more of a reason than ever to see the beauty in your very own backyard. From the history of Yellowstone to the tips of the tallest sequoias in King’s Canyon, the public is invited to take in nature’s diversity.

Washington, DC

In the nation’s capital, the place where so much of the Civil Rights demonstrations were centered, the services of remembrance take on both a somber and a joyous atmosphere. Here’s a sample of what will be going on:

  • Georgetown University and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts are proud to present a special musical performance featuring the Let Freedom Ring Choir. Tickets are free but required to attend. They will be handed out the day of the event in front of the concert hall starting at 5:00pm. This concert also features award-winning singer Dionne Warwick.
  • Kids’ tours of the Martin Luther King memorial will be held twice a day all weekend, at 11:00am and 2:00pm. Kids will learn about history and have the chance to earn a “Junior Ranger” badge.

New York, NY

Perhaps no place in the United States is such a perfect example of cultural diversity as the Big Apple. For decades, people from all over the world and all walks of life came here to start fresh in a place where the felt their dreams could be realized. The ideas of equality and community presented by King take on a new life in this amazing place.

  • Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at Columbus Circle is hosting a special jazz show at 7:00pm and 9:00 pm.
  • The Children’s Museum of Manhattan is hosting a variety of activities focused on community service and understanding the message of Dr. King. The exhibits are mostly geared toward kids between the ages of 4 and 8.

Atlanta, GA

It was in the south that the call for equality was heard the loudest, and to this day people come together to celebrate the incredible bravery and acts of civil disobedience that rang throughout the region.

  • A Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Holiday Commemorative March & Rally will be held at 1:45pm. It begins at Peachtree Street and Baker Street and ends outside the King Center at 4:30pm.
  • The MLK Day 5k Drum Run will start at 8:00am in Piedmont Park. The event gets its name from the 3.1 mile drumline all along the race course. This unique event lets runners register their school, church, organization, etc. as a beneficiary for proceeds from the fundraiser.

If you are looking for transportation to these remarkable events, remember we are here to make your life easier. Book your bus tickets today on GotoBus.com!

Saturate Your Summer!

Let’s start with a blatantly obvious statement: summer is really hot. The word itself evokes images of men and women in bathing suits, lounging on a sandy beach or poolside, while children run around and playfully shout in the shallow waters. Aquatic-based activities – whether they are beach trips, days spent at the pool, water-park excursions, etc. – go as hand-in-hand with summer as the changing of the leaves do to fall. To help you maximize your summer vacation, we have listed the five best water-themed vacations and trip ideas around the United States and Canada.

Virginia Beach, Virginia

Virginia Beach is one of the most popular tourist beaches in the country, providing an endless supply of summer fun: in addition to the vast amount of activities on the beach, which include swimming and surfing, there are opportunities for kayaking, golfing, and biking. The beach itself is in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the longest stretch of pleasure beach in the world. Stroll down to the three-mile boardwalk, which is constantly packed with entertainment from live music to cafes, as well as being lined with hotels and resorts, so that you will never be without a place to stay.

Virginia Beach

Disney World Water Parks (Typhoon Lagoon/Blizzard Beach), Orlando, Florida

The Disney World Parks and Resorts in Orlando are already extremely popular destinations for families, but the summer months are an especially great time to visit what has become one of the most beloved tourist destinations in the world. Disney World has two themed water-parks on its grounds: Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach. Each park has its own background story: the first is designed like a bay that has just been hit by a tropical storm; the second is modeled after a ski resort, with the added twist that all the snow is melting. Plummet down one of the parks’ steep, exhilarating slides, or merely sit back, relax, and float away down the lazy river.

Typhoon Lagoon

Venice Beach, Los Angeles, California

A go-to shooting location for any film or television show that needs a shot of a Los Angeles beach, the beach at Venice has a mile-long boardwalk that serves as a cross-section of local culture. Street artists and performers dot the boardwalk, ready to amaze. Murals stretch across the facades of buildings. The public, outdoor basketball courts are where many professional players honed their skills before they entered the NBA. Then, when you’ve had your fill of the beach, you can explore the interior streets of Venice to find even more entertainment and shopping opportunities.

Venice Beach

Whale Watching, Vancouver, BC, Canada

Okay – the summer tends to be all about the beaches. Just about everyone wants to kick back on the sand and in the sun, taking some time to cool off in the water. But the beach is not for everyone; some people find sand annoying, don’t like the crowds, etc. If you’re one of these types, but still desire a perfect vacation (and who doesn’t need that?) centered on aquatic activities, book a trip to Vancouver, BC, and hop on a whale watching tour, which will sail you out onto the cool waters of the northeast Pacific Ocean, where you can relax while you look out across the sea to try to spot one of these massive, beautiful creatures.

Vancouver

Mississippi River Cruise, Memphis, Tennessee

The Mighty Mississippi – the largest river in the United States and a region brought to life by Mark Twain, one of America’s greatest men of letters, in his classic novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, this immense body of water stretches from northern Minnesota all the way south through the American heartland before draining into the Gulf of Mexico in Louisiana. Memphis, TN, sits right on the banks of this iconic river, and visitors during the summer should consider taking a cruise in a classic-style riverboat, much like the one that Twain himself worked on. From Memphis, you can cruise to many of the other cities located on the Mississippi, such as St. Louis and New Orleans.

Mississippi River

Buses to any of these cities, and more, are available for low prices at GotoBus.com. Don’t forget, there are also further discounts available if you decide to book you bus tickets and hotel stay together – but book soon or else the summer will fly by you.

It’s Wintertime in the City!

Balloons

Thanksgiving and the rest of the winter holiday season are on our doorstep, and for those who revel in winter festivities, there is no destination like New York City! So for those headed to the Northeast in the coming months, we’ve compiled a list of awesome and fun things to do and see with family and friends. Remember to book your bus to New York as far in advance as possible, as seats sell out quickly, and shows are booked early!

Here are our picks for the best of NYC’s famous winter attractions:

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade: November 28, 9:00am

Now in its 87th year, this spectacular parade is viewed by nearly 50 million people at home and in the streets annually. A staple of the holiday season, its famous balloons have served as plot devices on both Seinfeld and Friends. New balloon additions this year include Finn and Jake from Adventure Time as well as a special 75th-Anniversary Wizard of Oz balloon that is more than three stories high and has 90 handlers. This year’s floats include the new Dreidel balloon-vehicle as well as a Cirque du Soleil performance float and the classic “Big Apple” collection of New York landmarks. The NYPD Marching Band, among others, will be providing music. As always, the parade will end with Santa riding down the road and ushering in the Christmas season. If you want to go see the parade in person, you will need to get into the city well before the 9:00am start time to secure a spot on the sidewalk.

The Radio City Christmas Spectacular: November 8 – December 30

If you grew up anywhere near New York City, you’ve probably seen this world-famous show multiple times. It began in 1933 and has since become a staple of the NYC holiday season. It features more than 140 performers and includes live animals, but its most well-known act is the Rockettes dance troupe and their renown kickline. The perfect treat for wide-eyed children, this show tells the story of Santa’s journey around the world on Christmas Eve. Tickets for November performances are as low as $39 a head, but the closer the show date is to December 25 itself, the more expensive tickets get, so starting your holiday a little early could be both a fun and cost-effective way to spend a weekend in the city.

The Rink at Rockefeller Center

It’s been featured everywhere from Futurama to Serendipity and is at the heart of one of New York’s most famous landmarks. The ice-skating rink at Rockefeller Center is a favorite spot for tourists and locals alike and offers a one-of-a-kind winter experience. Admission to the rink is $15 for children under the age of 11 and seniors and $27 for adults plus $12 per person if renting skates (though guests are more than welcome to bring their own). Special rates are available by reservation for groups of 15 or more. This is a favorite winter-date activity as well!

The 2013 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting: December 4, 7:00pm

This star-studded event completes the ambiance of holiday fervor that settles over New York City during December. The lighting of the tree has been a yearly event since 1933 and is broadcast nationwide. The tree is selected very carefully, and in the past has come from as far away as Ottawa (although usually it is from somewhere in the American Northeast). The tree averages just over 70 feet, and is covered in more than five miles of lights. The star at the top is nine-and-a-half feet in diameter and weighs in at just over a quarter-ton. Like most events in New York, those who wish to attend should arrive well before the official start time if they hope to get a good seat for the ceremony itself.

So bundle up and enjoy the cheer! The most wonderful time of the year is on the doorstep, and New York is ready to celebrate.
