Memorial Day

This weekend FINALLY marks the unofficial beginning of summer. So get your sunblock ready and your white clothes picked out… let’s get the beach parties and barbeques started!

If you’re looking for a unique Memorial Day adventure, here are some cool things to do this weekend in a few major US cities.

New York

Summer Movie Series: Top Gun | Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum | Friday, May 23, 7:30pm

The USS Intepid’s 6th-annual Summer Movie Series is adding Top Gun to their list of free-to-see movies. Bring a blanket (and bug spray!), chairs, and some snack, and settle in to watch this classic movie under the stars. Seating is limited and on a first-come-first-serve basis. There are no admissions after 8:30pm. If you are a museum member, you will be given priority admission in the “members only” line. The museum also encourages guests to take a guided tour while they are waiting at the museum for the movie to start. The tours run at 6:00pm or 6:15pm, and tickets cost between $15 and $20.

Green-Wood’s Memorial Day Concert | 500 25th Street, Brooklyn | Monday, May 26, 2:30pm

This free Memorial Day concert, now in its sixteenth year, features the ISO Symphonic Band, which was founded in 1995 to showcase students throughout New York City. Bring chairs or blankets; food and refreshments will be on sale throughout the day. Tickets are free for this event, but they are encouraging you to RSVP here so they are able to gauge crowd turnout.

Memorial Day Special Trolley Tour | Green-Wood | Monday, May 26, 5:00pm

Directly following the Memorial Day Concert is this special tour, which costs $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Take a tour of this historic area aboard a trolley! Seating is limited and fills up quickly, so it might be a good idea to reserve your tickets in advance.

Chicago

The wreath-laying ceremony begins at 11:00am at the Eternal Flame on Daley Plaza, and the parade will kick of starting 12:00pm. The parade is one of the largest in the country, and honors current and fallen heroes.

Boston

Honor & Tribute: Boston’s 2nd Annual Memorial Day Concert | Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park, 200 Atlantic Avenue, Boston | Monday, May 26, 7:30pm

Join Boston and the City of Boston Veterans’ Services in this wonderful musical tribute to honor soldiers. Though this event is free to attend, they recommend you reserve your spot by registering online.

We wouldn’t have Memorial Day Weekend without those who are in service or who have served in the US military, so please: thank a soldier you know or any that you see!
