Travel Europe on the Cheap - How to Enjoy Bus Tours

Many would-be travelers dream about strolling down the Avenue des Champs-Elysees but are not willing to mortgage their future to finance the trip. However, traveling Europe on the cheap does not require backpacking and hitching free rides from strangers! One affordable solution that offers a happy medium between a super luxurious getaway and "roughing it" is a packaged bus tour.

Packaged bus tours offer the best value per day, due to the tour operator's ability to secure group rates on hotel accommodations, ground transportation, and sightseeing attractions. They also provide peace of mind, which is priceless: the discerning traveler does not need to obtain an international driver's license, rent a car (let alone remember on which side of the road to drive!), or read train schedules in foreign languages.

To get the most out of a European bus tour, remember the following travel tips.

Tips to enjoy a Europe bus tour:

  • Dress Comfortably: You will spend much of your time sightseeing or riding on the bus. Wear sensible clothes that you can wear while walking around in public areas, and that also fit well while sitting down.

  • Be Camera Ready: Pack extra batteries for the camera. Packaged bus tours feature numerous attractions and will often visit multiple countries. However, once the tour leaves for the next attraction, there is usually no turning back. Get that last photo op!

  • Eat Wisely: Carry snacks to ward off hunger attacks on the bus, and take advantage of any breakfast inclusions available at the hotel. Be wary of purchasing food at major sightseeing venues where prices are the highest.

  • Bring Entertainment: You will have downtime in between attractions and tours. Pack an MP3 player or a book and magazine to keep yourself occupied while en route to the next exciting destination.

  • Keep an Open Mind: Touring Europe provides a unique experience to enrich your mind. Interact with passengers to discover similar interests, and learn about local cultures and traditions.

Palm Springs is a major tourist destination for travelers who crave warm weather, mountain views and desert excursions. Next our tour will take a short break to experience the natural Dates of the valley. After the break you will head into the heart of the Old Movie Colony of Palm Springs and the Las Palmas area of Palm Springs. New England Seacoast Tour

This past weekend I was able to catch the last New England Seacoast tour of the season. The morning started off with a 9:30am departure from Boston. The bus was very clean and spacious. You could tell our tour guide, Dick, had done this tour many times before but clearly enjoyed his job. He was very enthusiastic and told us more facts (including which parts of Boston used to be under water and how to interact with the local Mainiacs- people from Maine) about New England than you ever wanted to know. We also heard many stories that he had accumulated over the years.

1. Our first stop was in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. This is a beautiful beach about 15 miles south of Portsmouth. Here we stopped for some photos and a bathroom break but didn't stay too long because all the businesses were closed for the winter. I definitely want to come back here in the summer months to enjoy some fried clams and ice cream. This beach is supposedly ranked as the third best beach in America but I could not confirm this fact. As far as New England beaches go, this one was very well maintained and looked like it would be a thriving tourist destination in warmer months.

2. After enjoying the beach, we made our way to York, ME to see Nubble Light. I had been here once before and it is just as nice as I had remembered it. This is the most photographed lighthouse in Maine and it is easy to see why. This area has some of the highest value residences in the entire state of Maine. After viewing Nubble Light, we continued our bus journey and viewed the mansions along the coastline. One house we passed featured a heated Roman bath (including white columns)in the front yard. Imagine relaxing in your personal Roman bath while enjoying the picturesque coastal views!

3. Next stop on our tour was Kennebunkport, ME, a quaint New England town. Kennebunkport is one of the most popular vacation spots in New England because of its upscale art galleries, shops, and river/coastal views.

Once in Kennebunkport we stopped at the Pilot House for a quick bite to eat. I had the lobster roll and clam chowdah (like a true New Englander). After lunch we had some free time to shop, grab dessert and explore the town on our own. I especially enjoyed seeing the nearby houses and seeing how delighted the tourists from far away were (we had people from Australia, Texas, and Britain on our bus). Some people on the tour had never experienced fall foliage and New England culture.

Kennebunkport is also well-known because of its longtime summer resident, former president George H.W. Bush. Our bus slowed down long enough for me to snap a quick picture through the window so that you can get a glimpse of the oceanside "Bush Compound".

At 3:45pm we left Maine and headed back to Boston. Overall, I was impressed with this tour. The time was well managed and we were able to see a lot in a relatively short amount of time. I would highly recommend booking this trip when it reopens in the spring, especially if it is your first time in the area.

The only question now is, "Where to go next?!?"

Halloween Tours- Frightening!

We hope that you all enjoyed the long Columbus Day weekend. Now that you are back to work isn’t it time to start thinking about the next holiday already? While most people don’t have Halloween off from work it is still a great time of year to take a spook-tacular tour. There is something special about this time of year. Maybe it’s the costumes, the candy corn or the tacky black and orange color combination that keep popping up. Everyone likes a good scare…where will yours be this year?

Here are our top picks for this Halloween!

Haunted Vegas Tour: This spirited and spooky ghost tour will take you to the haunting grounds of Bugsy Siegel, Liberace, Redd Foxx and Elvis.

French Quarter Ghost 1-Day Tour: You'll visit New Orleans sights of documented haunting, ghosts, spirits and see the French Quarter residences in which unbelievable events took place.

Ghosts & Gravestones - Savannah: Savannah is often referred to as “America’s Most Haunted City”. Discover the only house in Savannah to undergo an exorcism and hear frightening tales of mayhem!

Salem - Witch City 1-Day Tour: In Salem, we'll step back to 1692 and visit the Salem Witch Museum. Travel down Derby Street past Nathaniel Hawthorne's Custom House & the House of the Seven Gables.

If you really want to go all out…make sure that you dress for the occasion. In costume, that is! The most popular 2008 Halloween costumes for kids are Hannah Montana and Indiana Jones. For the older folks, Princess Leia and Batman Dark Knight make the top of the list.

Currently, we have seven shows playing in Las Vegas and everyone knows that a trip to Sin City is not complete without seeing a show or two!

Jubilee Show at Bally's
Bally's Hotel , Bally's Las Vegas
Donn Arden’s Jubilee! has entertained Las Vegas for more than 20 years! Why the longevity? Perhaps it’s the eye-catching, toe-tapping musical numbers staged on million-dollar sets. Or perhaps it’s the costumes designed by Bob Mackie, shining brighter than any multi-color sign on The Strip.

V The Ultimate Variety Show
Planet Hollywood Las Vegas
Unique specialty performers from around the world come together in "V", the fast-paced showcase of record breaking, jaw dropping, uproarious, turn-of-the-tables performances and comedy where the specialty acts rule the show! Every show includes magic, special effects, death-defying stunts, wild comedy, visual artists, physical insanity and much more!

Steve Wyrick Show
Planet Hollywood Las Vegas
Steve Wyrick pulls out all the stops for this one-of-a-kind, mega-illusion magic experience. Wyrick performs some of the most imaginative and mind-blowing illusions anywhere. His signature, larger-than-life illusions will headline the show, but it will be Wyrick's personal touches that will make his show unforgettable, allowing audience members to be as close as they can handle for a magic experience like no other.

Ice Show
Riviera Las Vegas
It is ice. It is air. And it is everything unlike anything in between. 42 of Russia's most disciplined & athletic performers converge on one frozen stage to bring you an unprecedented epic production based on works by the founder of Moscow Ice Circus, Sergey Ryshkoff and adapted by the team of Emmy award winning Debra Brown.

Le Rêve Show
Wynn Las Vegas
Le Rêve presented exclusively at Wynn Las Vegas, offers breathtaking performances in an intimate aqua theater in-the-round. The show features aerial acrobatics, provocative choreography and artistic athleticism. The cast of 85 captures the imagination with their outrageous antics and daring feats of strength and agility.

KÀ Show
MGM Grand Hotel Las Vegas
KÀ by Cirque du Soleil is an unprecedented theatrical event. A masterpiece in storytelling, KÀ uses acrobatic performances, the thrills and action of martial arts techniques from all over the world, plus innovations in puppetry and multimedia to tell the epic tale of twins on a perilous journey to fulfill their shared destiny.

"O" Show
Bellagio Las Vegas
"O" pays homage to the magic of the theatre from the simplest street performance to the most lavish of operas - where anything is possible and where the drama of life plays itself out before your very eyes. The Las Vegas show O followed in the footsteps of Mystere, proving that the popularity of the Cirque De Soleil company was no fluke.

The Cirque De Soleil “O" Show is definitely at the top of my wish list. See reviews of the show here. Tickets to all shows can be purchased at http://www.gotobus.com/shows/.

Fall Back to Summer

Fall is near. More often than not you notice yourself grabbing sweaters rather than the usual tank top and flip-flop combination that carried you throughout the summer. Don’t fret. Now is the perfect time to use up your left over vacation days before they expire. Pack up the kids for a trip to Florida! Columbus Day (October 13th) is right around the corner and this is a great opportunity to plan an extended weekend getaway.

GotoBus has many touring options in Orlando and Miami. Go for a couple days or plan an entire week away.

If theme parks are your thing (or your kids). We’ve got that covered!

Parks Available:
Walt Disney World: Magic Kingdom, EPCOT Center and Animal Kingdom
Universal Studios: Universal’s Islands of Adventure
SeaWorld Orlando
Wet ‘N Wild
Busch Gardens Tampa Bay
Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park
Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park

If you want to enjoy Florida’s natural beauty and schedule in some beach time you may want to consider an Everglades Safari or a trip to Marcos Island.

Whatever you choose, your friends will be jealous of your deep tan lasting well into November. They don’t call Florida the sunshine state for nothing!

Gambling (and Shopping) Getaways!

Looking for something to do this weekend? Don’t have a car? Try a single-day bus package that provides round-trip transportation: great for a care-free day of casino fun or outlet mall deals.

In the Boston area, the perfect opportunities are a casino package to Mohegan Sun or a shopping trip to Wrentham Village Premium Outlets.

For the shoppers and bargain hunters, if you’re tired of the same old shopping scene with the same stores carrying the same merchandise (and prices) in the immediate Boston area, take a trip to Wrentham’s outlet mall. You will “find savings of 25% to 65% every day” from 170 brand names all in one place, and the “New England style village” provides a pet-friendly outdoor breath of air between stores. Lockers as well as stroller rentals are available. You’ll be able to spend a full day here, too, because the food court, Friendly’s, Ruby Tuesday, and The Village Café are all right on the premises. Other restaurants such as Cracker Barrel and Uno are just down street.

Requiring a 45 minute drive from Boston, Wrentham’s outlet mall is the closest to Boston of its type. The mall is well worth the drive for many shoppers and deal-seekers. Why not take the round-trip bus ride for a comfortable, care-free trip and avoid the hassle of traffic and parking.

If you want to gamble, or if you’re just looking for a place to hang out, find a little entertainment, and have some great food, a casino bus package may be the thing for you. Purchasing the Mohegan Sun casino travel package provides you round-trip transportation, “a bonus of $20 towards bets, and a $15 dining certificate towards Mohegan Sun’s vast choice of fine restaurants.” So even if you don’t have the income to gamble, you can still have a little fun with that $20 bonus. But if you’re just not the gambling type, Mohegan Sun has many other distractions, such as great eating (Johnny Rockets, Michael Jordan’s Steak House, Todd English’s Tuscany), great shopping (Coach, Swarovski, Yankee Candle), and some world-class performances (Rod Stewart, Willie Nelson, Justin Timberlake).

Have a young child? Children cannot gamble at Mohegan Sun, but there is childcare in the form of Kids Quest / Cyber Quest. But if you don’t want to pay for that, you could visit the spa. In fact, there’s so much to do, you might want to stay an extra day or two. And at such a low price, what’s the harm in buying an extra ticket?

Both single-day bus trips can be found on GotoBus.com.
