The Griffith Observatory

The Griffith Observatory sits on the slopes of Mount Hollywood, overlooking the expansive city below. Built in the 1930s, this facility features exhibits that teach visitors all about astronomy and includes a planetarium theater. It’s most famous appearance in a movie came during the tragic climax of the 1950s classic Rebel Without a Cause, the film that launched James Dean to stardom. The observatory has also appeared in The Terminator, The People vs. Larry Flint, Transformers, and several others.

Mulholland Drive

Mulholland Drive is a famous street that winds its way through the Santa Monica Mountains and Hollywood Hills, past the beautiful homes of celebrities like Justin Timberlake, Jack Nicholson, and Reese Witherspoon. Because of its sharp twists and turns, it has gained a reputation as a dangerous roadway. Given its ominous history, it’s no surprise that the critically acclaimed director David Lynch, known for his unsettling brand of filmmaking, wrote and directed a psychological mystery movie named Mulholland Drive, which centers on a car accident that takes place on the street. Just like the road, it is named for, this movie is full of unexpected twists, turns, and peril. Lynch was nominated for the Academy Award for his work on directing this film.

The Hollywood Sign

The Hollywood Sign is the unofficial symbol of Los Angeles, towering proudly above the city. It has been filmed, imitated, and parodied in several movies, including Shrek 2, The Day After Tomorrow, Pretty Woman, and countless others. The sign was initially established in 1923 as a temporary advertisement for local real estate but eventually became so recognizable on its own that it was left standing.

Universal is one of the biggest production companies in the movie industry, and you can tour their official studios, nicknamed “The Entertainment Capital of LA.” On the studio tour, you will wander through the back lot and get to see sets from various movies, some of them old and some of them currently being used for productions. Then, after your tour, you can hop over to the theme park to go on some thrilling rides like The Simpsons Roller Coaster, Shrek 4D, and Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem. This is a great way to have some family fun while exploring behind-the-scenes.
