Playtime for the whole family. One more trip before the summer ends, please!

End of Summer Playtime for the Whole Family
Summer Fountain Fun

Alas! Summer is coming to an end, and, as always, it was too short. Kids are dreading the approach of the school year, and their parents are wishing they had one last opportunity to escape the stresses of work and enjoy the beautiful weather. Fortunately, there is still time to book a perfect family getaway and end the summer with a bit of playtime for the whole family. Below, we have listed some of our favorite cities, each with one amazing playground for the kids and a nightlife event for the adults.

New York City

Teardrop Park

A section of the larger Tribeca, Manhattan, this is not a traditional playground, with swings and jungle-gyms, although there is a large slide that is sure to leave your kids laughing. Teardrop Park is marked by heaving rock formations that help to hide the surrounding city, giving this place an atmosphere of calm seclusion amid the hustle-and-bustle of the country’s busiest city. Along with the slide, the park features a large sandbox area, a tunnel under one of the rock formations, a reading circle, multiple sitting greens, and the “water rocks,” a fountain built into one of the rocks.

Nuyorican Poets Cafe

Founded in the Alphabet City neighborhood of Manhattan in 1973 to give the city’s large population of Puerto Rican writers a venue to showcase their talents (“Nuyorican” is a term for a New Yorker of Puerto Rican descent), this is one of New York’s best performing arts venues. Striving to give voice to artists who would otherwise be underrepresented in mainstream culture, the Nuyorican hosts a diverse array of events, from theater and music pieces to slam poetry every Friday night.

San Francisco

Adventure Playground (Berkeley)

Wow! This is a one-of-a-kind playground, located in Berkeley across the bay from San Francisco, and is sure to make parents envy their children. It features forts, boats, and towers, all designed by children, for children. Kids can go wild on the zipline, or get in touch with their creative sides by painting. It is recommended to wear sturdy shoes (no sandals or flip-flops!) and clothes that can get wet and dirty. See the park’s website for a full list of rules and other information.

After Dark at Exploratorium

Held at San Francisco’s Exploratorium, a facility showcasing “how the world works” through engaging, interactive scientific exhibits After Dark is a nighttime series for adults only that mixes science, art, cocktails – a winning trio. Each night focuses on a different topic, with names like “Tricks Are Treats” and “Decay.” This show offers it all: live performance, film, music, technology, alcohol, stimulating conversation – there is something for everyone. Visit the Exploratorium website for a full event schedule and a list of After Dark themes.

Boston – Harvard Square

Alexander W. Kemp Playground

A newly redesigned playground that still retains the look of an older, wooden playground, Kemp Playground, north of Harvard Square, has structures built on small hills and sand that facilitate climbing, swinging, and sliding, with areas suitable for all young ages from toddlers up. The mission of its designers was to create a space that incorporated both playing and learning about the surrounding world.

Oberon

The second stage of Cambridge’s American Repertory Theater (ART), Oberon mixes theatrical performance into a nightclub setting, featuring many shows, both temporary and regular, that usually would not get the same attendance on the ART’s mainstage. Many of these shows are interactive, such as the highly popular “Donkey Show,” a disco-reimagining of William Shakespeare’s beloved play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, complete with divas, roller skates, and glitter, held every Saturday Night. Visit the ART’s website for a full event schedule and other information.

Thanksgiving Weekend Fun!

Where are you going to be celebrating this fun weekend of Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving Weekend Fun!
Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Thanksgiving Weekend Fun! It is a busy time for travel. A lot of people will be trying to get home to spend time with their loved ones. If you’ll be one of the many weary travelers this year, you should visit GotoBus.com, one of the web’s leading marketplaces for affordable bus tickets, to find the route that will get you where you need to go. Thanksgiving dinner tastes great, but it tastes even better when surrounded by those closest to you!

New York

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is the most anticipated event on the holiday, and this year, marks the 89th year the parade has been running. Not only do crowds of people line the streets of Manhattan to see floats of their favorite cartoon characters, like Snoopy and Spongebob, but there will also be performances from talented marching bands, cheerleaders, dance teams, and more! This year’s parade will also feature musical performances from crowd favorites like Jordin Sparks, Prince Royce, Train, Andra Day, and Shawn Mendes. Be sure to check out the official website for the complete list! Even though thousands of people line up on the streets of Manhattan to watch the parade in person, even more people tune in on their televisions to watch from all around the US. Be sure to book tickets to New York to see this huge celebration in person before they sell out!

Boston

The very first Thanksgiving was held in the Greater Boston Area in Plymouth, MA when the Pilgrims broke bread with the Native Americans who lived in the area. Plimoth Plantation is a living museum (actors will be in costumes and acting out what life was like back then) where you can see a replica of the original community they established in 1620. We can’t think of many better ways to celebrate Thanksgiving than by reliving the history that is behind the holiday. Book bus tickets to Boston for an authentic Turkey Day experience!

Chicago

New York’s not the only major American city that hosts a parade! Chicago is another huge urban area (and it’s cleaner than NYC!) that knows the best way to get down, hosting the annual McDonald’s Thanksgiving Parade. Beginning on State Street downtown, the parade runs from 8 to 11 AM. Though it’s been held since 1934, McDonald’s became the first title sponsor in 1984. The mascot is Teddy Turkey, a plump, fun-loving bird who goes around spreading holiday cheer. Hang out with Teddy by booking bus tickets to Chicago now!

Florida

The Seniors First Turkey Trot 5K has been a Thanksgiving tradition in the Orlando area for the past 25 years. It’s a race around Lake Eola to help benefit the area’s senior citizens. Participants are invited to wear Pilgrim attire or turkey costumes and race to the finish! This is definitely a great opportunity to take some pictures of people in ridiculous outfits! There are also countless theme parks in the Orlando area to help keep your family entertained. Book your bus tickets to Florida now at an unbeatable low rate!

Los Angeles

On November 29th, Los Angeles will host the Hollywood Christmas Parade. OK, we know, it’s not for Thanksgiving, but that seems a little early for Christmas, doesn’t it? This year, magician duo Penn and Teller have been selected as the Grand Marshalls for the parade, so it’s sure to be a magical experience. The parade begins at 5 PM on Hollywood Boulevard. Book your bus tickets to California now!

Detroit

After a few tough years, it finally seems like Detroit is back on the upswing. This is great news for the automotive capital of the US. You can join the local community in celebrating and show off your patriotism by joining America’s Thanksgiving Parade. It’s the second-oldest parade in the country (after Macy’s), and features similar floats. The climax of the parade is the arrival of Santa Claus, who announces the beginning of the Christmas season. Book tickets to Detroit from cities all around the around the country!

Thanksgiving Weekend Fun!

Veterans Day Happenings

Veterans Day Happenings
Veterans Day Celebration

On Wednesday, November 11, the United States will celebrate Veterans Day, a holiday held in honor of its citizens who served in the Armed Forces. While Memorial Day in May honors those who gave their lives serving their country, Veterans Day is meant to show appreciation for those men and women who are still living. If you are not a veteran yourself, odds are that you know someone who is, whether they are a family member, a friend, a coworker, or even the barista at your local coffee shop. Veterans are all over the place, but when they’re out of uniform, there’s no way to distinguish them from regular civilians. That is why a holiday like this is so important: it gives us a chance to realize that we are surrounded by brave people who are willing to put everything on the line for the safety of our country. So, if you see someone in uniform on Wednesday, make sure to thank them! Below, we’ve included some events happening and ways to contribute in various cities across the country that will be held in honor of Veterans Day.

Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. is the number one place to go if you want to join in the festivities to honor veterans. The main event in D.C. each year is the Concert for Valor, a huge musical event held on the National Mall. The event is always able to book some of the music industry’s biggest names, but this year’s lineup is going to be something special! The performers include indie-rock duo the Black Keys; “the Boss” himself, Bruce Springsteen; former American Idol winners Carrie Underwood; Grammy and Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson; Dave Grohl, former drummer of Nirvana and current lead singer of the Foo Fighters; superstar rapper Eminem; legendary thrash-metal group Metallica; and, last but not least, Rihanna, a pop sensation and fashion icon. The show starts at 7 PM and is free to attend!

Arlington National Cemetery is a beautiful area to visit at any point during the year, but on Veterans Day, there are several ceremonies held around the grounds. Among them will be the 17th annual Women’s Military Memorial Service, held in honor of the brave women who have served in the military. These days, there are many people who question whether women have a place in the military, so it’s refreshing to see these brave ladies getting the recognition they deserve!

D.C. is also filled with war memorials and monuments, and each one has a different ceremony scheduled to honor its veterans, including the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the United States Marine Corps Memorial.

Chicago

Soldier Field is the home of Chicago’s NFL team, the Bears. It was named in honor of the fallen soldiers in World War I. At 11 AM on Veterans Day, there will be a special ceremony at Gate 0. Then after that, head up to Navy Pier, one of the city’s most entertaining areas. There are several restaurants where you can get a delicious bite to eat, a Ferris wheel that offers an amazing view of the city’s skyline, Lake Michigan cruises that leave from the docks, and much more!

New York City

The Big Apple hosts the annual America’s Parade each Veterans Day, the largest celebration of veterans in the country. This event gets a lot of media coverage, and this year, it will be broadcast on television and live streamed on the internet, so you can watch from anywhere in the world as wave after wave of service men and women march up Fifth Avenue. There will be over 250 groups and 20,000 people marching in the parade. The opening ceremony is scheduled for 10 AM near Madison Square Park, and the parade will follow at 11:25.

Los Angeles

The Battleship USS Iowa Museum is located inside a retired Navy vessel in Los Angeles Harbor. The boat itself was an important ship in the Pacific Theater in World War II. Every year, it holds a Veterans Appreciation ceremony that lasts 4 days. Beginning on November 8th, visitors will not only get the chance to honor veterans, but also learn about the history of this famous ship. There will also be a Veterans Day commemoration at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, which will include live musical performances, a display of military vehicles, a flyover with real military aircraft, and more. The program begins at 11 AM.

Boston

It is a sad truth that after completing their service to the country, many veterans are unable to find jobs as civilians and end up on the streets. If you’re going to be in Beantown on the 11th, please consider volunteering at the New England Center for Homeless Veterans at 17 Court Street, where you will help serve meals to over 250 men and women who found themselves in an unfortunate position after their service. Volunteers must register with the organization ahead of time, so give the NECHV a call or visit their website to fill out the necessary form. This isn’t a once-a-year event, either: the Center does this every day, and it can always use volunteers!

Veterans Day Happenings

These are only a small sample of the countless Veterans Day parades, ceremonies, and events that are scheduled for November 11th. Whether you live in the biggest of cities or the smallest of towns, there is sure to be an event near you, so head out and show some appreciation for these courageous veterans. And, as always, if you need to make any travel arrangements, visit GotoBus.com!

Horrifying Halloween Traveling

Have you had a horrifying Halloween traveling experience? No worries, we got you

Horrifying Halloween Traveling
Halloween Celebration

It’s said that the unknown is the most frightening thing of all. Maybe that’s why traveling can be so nerve-racking, especially if you’re going somewhere you’ve never been before. It’s appropriate, then, that this weekend is Halloween, a holiday of ghosts and goblins, tricks and treats, and all-around terror. It’s celebrated in just about every city and town in the country, so there are literally thousands of things going on, no matter where you are. Lucky for you, GotoBus.com is here to take away some of the terror of traveling. One of the internet’s leading marketplaces for convenient, affordable bus routes all over the country, GotoBus can help you find the perfect destination for your next vacation. Below, we’ve compiled a list of haunted houses and other spooky attractions you can visit this Halloween.

Museum of Death, Hollywood, CA

What a pleasant name! This museum in Hollywood began as an art gallery in the 1990s, but soon evolved into the current collection. There’s still plenty of artwork, it just happens to be made by some of the most notorious serial killers in history. There are also old police photographs of some of the most famous crime scenes in history, such as the Manson Family and Black Dahlia murders. On the walls are videos of autopsies, serial killers, cult recruitments, and more. These are all real footage and not reenactments. There’s even a real severed head, because who doesn’t have one of those lying just lying around? Though there are no age restrictions, this museum is best for mature audiences since it has been known to make visitors feel more than a little uncomfortable.

Horrifying Halloween Traveling

Frightworld, Buffalo, NY

This award-winning “screampark” opens every year to gear up for Halloween. It features five different themed areas, including the new “Night Stalkers,” an interactive flashlight adventure that leads you into a dark basement where – surprise – your flashlight will start to die. Yikes! The other areas include “Condemned,” where you’ll try to escape through the woods from a deranged family wearing animal masks; “Eerie State Asylum,” an after-dark stroll through a psychiatric hospital; and “Insanity,” a group activity that promises to be “the most intense, high tech, mind boggling attraction you have yet to experience.” Sounds like fun, but maybe we’ll sit this one out.

Nightmare on 13th, Salt Lake City, UT

In the 25 years since its opening, Nightmare on 13th has become one of the country’s top haunted houses. It is built off the superstitious idea that buildings don’t have 13th floors, due to the bad luck associated with the number. Built in an old warehouse, Nightmare covers 36,000 square-feet. While you wait to enter, you will watch a fully animated show that provides you with an introduction. Once you’re inside, there are over 45 rooms to navigate, each full of its own, unique terror. Have fun!

Horrifying Halloween Traveling

Mutter Museum, Philadelphia, PA

The website of this medical museum in Philadelphia asks, “Are you ready to be disturbingly informed?” That’s quite the tagline! This museum definitely lives up to that promise, considered the finest medical history museum in the US. Although this museum has a clear purpose beyond shock and awe, there’s no denying just how creepy some of the exhibits are, such as the Soap Lady, a corpse that is covered by a fatty substance that forms on decomposing bodies in special, airless environments. Also on display are a collection of skulls, the skeleton of a 7’6″ man known as the “American Giant,” the conjoined liver of a pair of Siamese twins, and so many more, equally disgusting, yet informative, exhibits. Seriously – have you ever wanted to see a bunch of jars filled with organs? The Mutter’s got you covered!

Gates of Hell, Las Vegas, NV

Vegas’s Gates of Hell is just one of the components of the city’s Freakling Bros. Trilogy of Terror. On its official website, it is billed as “an experiment in serious, uncompromising, interactive horror.” It is the first R-rated horror attraction in the country, meaning you must be at least 17 years old, unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. Not much information is given in terms of what goes on once you’re inside, but it promises “a slow and painful descent into cold black nothingness to meet the Prince of Darkness himself.” Umm.. OK, why don’t you go first and we’ll guard the entrance.

Horrifying Halloween Traveling

Well, there you have it. Five of the most frightening attractions in the US, all in exciting cities that love to go all out for Halloween. On GotoBus.com, you can find bus routes to any of the above-mentioned locations, book tickets, and even book hotel stays, meaning you can enjoy your vacation and leave the scary parts to us. Happy haunting!

Kick Back on a Cool Trip Before Returning to Campus

Kick Back on a Cool Trip Before Returning to Campus
Back to School

Are you excited to return to campus? but before doing so, kick back on a cool trip!

Unless you spent the past few months at a research station in Antarctica, you will have probably noticed that we’re in the dog days of summer when the weather is at its muggiest, and the next school year is looming overhead like a dark shadow. Yikes! Pretty soon, all you college students out there will be saying bye to Mom, Dad, and your friends from back home, and either returning to your buddies on campus or heading there for the first time. It’s such a fun, yet challenging experience. At GotoBus, we think we’ve got a great idea: why don’t you grab a few of your friends together to set out on an affordable trip to one of the country’s best cities? There are so many hip activities happening all over, from music festivals to interactive exhibits at museums and more. We’ll be happy to help you kick back on a cool trip before returning to campus with a few last-minute event suggestions occurring across the U.S.A.

San Francisco

The Palace of Fine Arts is an absolutely beautiful monument, originally built for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exhibition. These days, it hosts art exhibits and other events, but any groups going to San Francisco should check out some of the games the facility hosts, such as scavenger hunts, which are fun for families, and friends. For a more intensive game that will test how well you and your friends can work together as a team, reserve tickets for the Great Houdini Escape Room. This puzzle challenge was originally designed by Harry Houdini himself, the most famous illusionist of all time, for the 1915 Exhibition, and is now celebrating its 100th year. Your group will have 80 minutes to solve a series of puzzles in an effort to get out. Keep in mind that only about 25 percent of teams are successful, so be sure to call your smartest friends!

Since the 4th of July is such a patriotic holiday, we thought it would be a good idea to start in our nation’s capital, Washington, DC! And what better way to do that than with a 4th of July fireworks show? Weather permitting, the show begins at 9pm from the Reflecting Pool area of the Washington Monument, but thankfully, you will be able to be see the show throughout many areas of Washington DC and Virginia. The best viewing spots tend to fill up very quickly, so be sure to arrive early. For tips and tricks on additional viewing areas and important information on road closures, please be sure to visit the official National Park Service website.

Did you know that DC’s National Zoo has free admission? You didn’t read that wrong, we said FREE admission. We know our customers are on a budget, and visiting this historic zoo is the perfect activity to kill some time instead of your wallet! One of the oldest zoos in the United States, it’s fitting that it is housed in our nation’s capital. The National Zoo has an impressive collection of animals such as pandas, elephants, butterflies, Komodo Dragons, Bald Eagles, and much more. It was even home to the original Smokey the Bear (“Only YOU can prevent forest fires!”). For more information on the zoo’s hours and events happening throughout the summer, visit their website.

The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular is known worldwide for its annual July 4th collaboration with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. This year’s festivities begin early when the gates open at 9:00AM on the 4th, though the actual concert doesn’t start until 8:30PM that evening, so please plan accordingly. This year, the featured performer along with the Boston Pops will be the Boston Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps, the third oldest drum and bugle corps in the country. This is shaping up to be another Boston Pops show to remember! Boston Pops

Chicago, Illinois

It looks like the place to be in Chicago for the 4th is the Navy Pier! Though you can see fireworks from this area twice a week, the show for Independence Day certainly promises to be an extra-special occasion. Synced to music, the fireworks will be displayed right above Lake Michigan and are scheduled to start at 9:30PM, but you will need to arrive early since a very large crowd is expected. If you would like to try something a little different and want to view the fireworks away from the crowds, be sure to check out the Navy Pier website, which also has information on taking fireworks cruises and fireworks tours!

Grant Park is a public park with more than 300 acres to explore, the perfect place to spend the day walking around or take time visiting one of its many features, including the Art Institute of Chicago, Millennium Park (where Cloud Gate, a.k.a. “the bean,” is located), Buckingham Fountain, the Skating Ribbon, Petrillo Music Shell, Maggie Daley Park, and much more! To learn more about all the features included within Grant Park, visit the official website for Chicago’s Park District.

Bus tickets from New York to Chicago start at only $40 per person each way… what a great deal!

Chicago Navy Pier

New York, New York

Fourth of July wouldn’t seem complete without the annual fireworks show from Macy’s, and this year isn’t any different. Starting in 1976, the famous spectacle will once again be shown over the East River. There are many spots in The Big Apple to get a good view of the show, but you might want to get an early start to snag a spot. TimeOut New York has some great suggestions on the best places to view the fireworks, so you might want to check them out!

When we think of Coney Island, the first thing that comes to mind is usually the amusement park, but not for the 4th! On this day, something wonderful happens: a crowd gathers to witness the World-Famous Nathan’s International Hot Dog Eating Contest. Years ago, this contest started as a joke competition between some friends. Now, thousands of people watch this event in person, and it’s even broadcast live for the nation to see – truly considered one of the more bizarre “sporting” events of our time. Check out the event’s website for more information, including pictures and videos from past years.

You can grab bus tickets from Philadelphia to New York starting at just $12 a person – wow!

New York City

Las Vegas, Nevada

The great thing about Las Vegas is that since it’s the hub of entertainment 365 days a year, it won’t be difficult to find Independence Day celebrations in the area for the long holiday weekend. The Stratosphere Casino, Hotel & Tower will be setting off fireworks at 9:00PM, while Mandalay Bay’s celebrations not only include a fireworks display, but performances by the band 311 on July 3rd and July 4th. For more information on any of the 4th-themed events around Vegas, be sure to check out this website. If you live in the Midwest, you probably don’t want to spend too much time outside right now. That’s why winter is a perfect time to appreciate fine art. Chicago is blessed to have one of the most prestigious museums in the world, the Art Institute. Fans of classic 80’s teen comedies will remember this museum from a scene in the classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off when the title character and his friends visit while they skip school. In addition to collections that represent various cultures from around the world – including large wings dedicated to Asian, European, and African-American art – it houses works by many painters who are considered masters of their craft, like Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and Claude Monet, whose iconic Water Lilies is one of the true gems in this facility. Some of the temporary exhibits currently running at the Art Institute include Byzantine-Greek mosaics, paintings from the era of Spanish colonialism in the Andes Mountains region, Islamic art, and much more. Browse the Art Institute’s website for a full list of the permanent collections, temporary exhibits, and all the other information you could need. Be sure to reserve yours soon since, since New York to Chicago bus tickets are as little as $40 one-way!

New York, New York

Chinese New Year is a celebration to mark the end of the Chinese lunar calendar. This year is dedicated to the goat (or ram/sheep). Each animal in the Chinese zodiac is assigned lucky directions, and East is one of those for the goat. New York City, the cultural capital of the East Coast is home to one of the largest, busiest Chinatown districts in the country, and puts on a celebration to match. Though the official date of the New Year was February 19th, the festivities last for over 2 weeks, so you can see marvelous displays of traditional paper lanterns strung above the streets. In this popular Manhattan neighborhood, you will also be able to find some of the best Chinese restaurants in the country, which will drive any foodie crazy with delight. Washington DC to New York City bus tickets start at $21 a ticket.
