Green travel continues to be the top travel trend in 2019, as more eco-conscious tourists are making an effort to plan a sustainable and eco-friendly travel experience. Here are some tips and resources you may find useful.
Choose a green destination
If you have not yet had a determined place to go, just Google “Green Destinations” and search for inspirations. If you wish to travel within the United States, Niagara Falls and Yellowstone National Park are both highly recommended green destinations.
As known to all, the cost of accommodations and transportation services could go drastically high if you do not book ahead of time– especially when you are traveling on public holidays. Remember good deals sell fast. Therefore the most important thing we should keep in mind is to always make plans in advance.
Transportation is critical
In 2018, Rhodium reports that carbon emissions by transportation maintained its position to be the largest source of US greenhouse gas emissions for the third year running. Rapid growth in air travel contributes to the overall demand for jet fuel by 3.0%. A greener and more economical transportation method are intercity buses. Comparing to other transportation methods, intercity buses are no doubt the most flexible and low-cost option, which also covers the most grounds.
Packing light is another essential
element when it comes to travelling green. Most people will not realize the
impact of a heavy luggage. Not only will you risk of paying extra, but also
will it harm the atmosphere. Having to carry a heavier weight, your
transportation (bus, train, or airplane) will emit more greenhouse gas – which
we are trying to avoid. However, there are some nitty-gritties you will need to
bring, here’s a simple checklist:
Bring eco-friendly toiletries with minimum packaging
Wear reef-safe Sunscreen to protect yourself and the ocean/lake creatures
Utilize reusable water bottles and utensils to reduce your plastic trails
Carry a backpack or shopping bag, just in case you need extra room
There are so many things you can do other than sightseeing while traveling. Spend a day exploring local communities and treat yourself with a delicious meal, learn about the local history and culture. Or you can go shopping from local merchants, where there is lower transaction cost (economical and environmental). If you have the time and energy, you should always look for local green initiatives and non-profit organizations, and see if there is anything you could help them out with! Other than just having fun during the trip, you will be making an effort to make the world a better place. After all, the earth treats us so generously with so many wonders, it is our turn to give back.
Create Memories – Labor Day Weekend Getaways to Remember
Labor Day can be kind of bittersweet: on one hand, it provides everyone with a much-need break from their busy lives, but on the other, it unofficially marks the end of summer. This makes it a really popular time to sneak in one last weekend getaway while the weather is still nice. But with fun Labor Day Weekend events happening all over the country, it can be difficult to decide where to go. GotoBus always has your back in this department. We know all the best events in the coolest cities across the U.S., so keep reading for a list of activity ideas. We’ve tried to throw in a good mix for all ages!
New York City is home to some of the best urban parks in the world. Everyone knows about crown jewel, Central Park, but there are countless others located around the five boroughs that are much less crowded. If you’re looking to have a pleasant, low-key day-off, why not grab a basket, a blanket, and a few close friends, and make your way to Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, a 585-acre area filled with winding paths and enough tree coverage to make you forget that you’re in one of the busiest cities in the world. Alternatively, in Manhattan’s Bryant Park, you can see a free performance or participate in one of the activities program.
Top Places to visit in USA during 4th of July celebration – Affordable Bus Tickets
For many Americans, July 4th is a family holiday — it involves, fun, travel backyard barbecues, and the local fireworks extravaganza shows. Some people, however, have dreams of celebrating the nation’s birthday in a city other than their own. Thankfully, here are some top places to visit in the USA during your 4th of July celebration.
New York City – Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks
New York City knows how to throw a good celebration. Macy’s massive show is the biggest display in the country. This extravaganza is viewed live by 3 million people annually. The pyrotechnics show uses 50,000 effects in a 25-minute display. It will be launched from Brooklyn Bridge and four additional barges in the East River between East 23rd and East 37th Streets. This year’s pre-show performers include Brad Paisley and Heather Headley.
West Coast, East Coast & Other Places in Between. Celebrate the Holidays Across the U.S.
GotoBus.com can help take you many places, and during the holiday season there is more demand for quick-and-easy travel options than ever. In addition to just taking you to Mom’s house for your holiday, though, we can zip you to a number of holiday celebrations all across the country! Below are some of our favorite festivities in some of the biggest cities as well as handy links for quick trip booking.
On Wednesday, November 11, the United States will celebrate Veterans Day, a holiday held in honor of its citizens who served in the Armed Forces. While Memorial Day in May honors those who gave their lives serving their country, Veterans Day is meant to show appreciation for those men and women who are still living. If you are not a veteran yourself, odds are that you know someone who is, whether they are a family member, a friend, a coworker, or even the barista at your local coffee shop. Veterans are all over the place, but when they’re out of uniform, there’s no way to distinguish them from regular civilians. That is why a holiday like this is so important: it gives us a chance to realize that we are surrounded by brave people who are willing to put everything on the line for the safety of our country. So, if you see someone in uniform on Wednesday, make sure to thank them! Below, we’ve included some events happening and ways to contribute in various cities across the country that will be held in honor of Veterans Day.
Washington, D.C. is the number one place to go if you want to join in the festivities to honor veterans. The main event in D.C. each year is the Concert for Valor, a huge musical event held on the National Mall. The event is always able to book some of the music industry’s biggest names, but this year’s lineup is going to be something special! The performers include indie-rock duo the Black Keys; “the Boss” himself, Bruce Springsteen; former American Idol winners Carrie Underwood; Grammy and Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson; Dave Grohl, former drummer of Nirvana and current lead singer of the Foo Fighters; superstar rapper Eminem; legendary thrash-metal group Metallica; and, last but not least, Rihanna, a pop sensation and fashion icon. The show starts at 7 PM and is free to attend!
Arlington National Cemetery is a beautiful area to visit at any point during the year, but on Veterans Day, there are several ceremonies held around the grounds. Among them will be the 17th annual Women’s Military Memorial Service, held in honor of the brave women who have served in the military. These days, there are many people who question whether women have a place in the military, so it’s refreshing to see these brave ladies getting the recognition they deserve!
D.C. is also filled with war memorials and monuments, and each one has a different ceremony scheduled to honor its veterans, including the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the United States Marine Corps Memorial.
Soldier Field is the home of Chicago’s NFL team, the Bears. It was named in honor of the fallen soldiers in World War I. At 11 AM on Veterans Day, there will be a special ceremony at Gate 0. Then after that, head up to Navy Pier, one of the city’s most entertaining areas. There are several restaurants where you can get a delicious bite to eat, a Ferris wheel that offers an amazing view of the city’s skyline, Lake Michigan cruises that leave from the docks, and much more!
New York City
The Big Apple hosts the annual America’s Parade each Veterans Day, the largest celebration of veterans in the country. This event gets a lot of media coverage, and this year, it will be broadcast on television and live streamed on the internet, so you can watch from anywhere in the world as wave after wave of service men and women march up Fifth Avenue. There will be over 250 groups and 20,000 people marching in the parade. The opening ceremony is scheduled for 10 AM near Madison Square Park, and the parade will follow at 11:25.
The Battleship USS Iowa Museum is located inside a retired Navy vessel in Los Angeles Harbor. The boat itself was an important ship in the Pacific Theater in World War II. Every year, it holds a Veterans Appreciation ceremony that lasts 4 days. Beginning on November 8th, visitors will not only get the chance to honor veterans, but also learn about the history of this famous ship. There will also be a Veterans Day commemoration at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, which will include live musical performances, a display of military vehicles, a flyover with real military aircraft, and more. The program begins at 11 AM.
It is a sad truth that after completing their service to the country, many veterans are unable to find jobs as civilians and end up on the streets. If you’re going to be in Beantown on the 11th, please consider volunteering at the New England Center for Homeless Veterans at 17 Court Street, where you will help serve meals to over 250 men and women who found themselves in an unfortunate position after their service. Volunteers must register with the organization ahead of time, so give the NECHV a call or visit their website to fill out the necessary form. This isn’t a once-a-year event, either: the Center does this every day, and it can always use volunteers!
These are only a small sample of the countless Veterans Day parades, ceremonies, and events that are scheduled for November 11th. Whether you live in the biggest of cities or the smallest of towns, there is sure to be an event near you, so head out and show some appreciation for these courageous veterans. And, as always, if you need to make any travel arrangements, visit GotoBus.com!

If you live in the Midwest, you probably don’t want to spend too much time outside right now. That’s why winter is a perfect time to appreciate fine art. Chicago is blessed to have one of the most prestigious museums in the world, the Art Institute. Fans of classic 80’s teen comedies will remember this museum from a scene in the classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off when the title character and his friends visit while they skip school. In addition to collections that represent various cultures from around the world – including large wings dedicated to Asian, European, and African-American art – it houses works by many painters who are considered masters of their craft, like Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and Claude Monet, whose iconic Water Lilies is one of the true gems in this facility. Some of the temporary exhibits currently running at the Art Institute include Byzantine-Greek mosaics, paintings from the era of Spanish colonialism in the Andes Mountains region, Islamic art, and much more. New York, New York
Chinese New Year is a celebration to mark the end of the Chinese lunar calendar. This year is dedicated to the goat (or ram/sheep). Each animal in the Chinese zodiac is assigned lucky directions, and East is one of those for the goat. New York City, the cultural capital of the East Coast is home to one of the largest, busiest Chinatown districts in the country, and puts on a celebration to match. Though the official date of the New Year was February 19th, the festivities last for over 2 weeks, so you can see marvelous displays of traditional paper lanterns strung above the streets. As always, New York City will host its annual ball drop in Times Square, the largest New Year’s celebration in the world, which attracts an estimated one million spectators. From 6 PM to midnight, the streets are packed with people ready to turn the page to a new chapter in their lives, making resolutions for self-improvement, and seeking out that special someone for a New Year’s kiss. For decades, Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve will host live musical performances. This year will be hosted by Ryan Seacrest, and feature the boy band One Direction and America’s sweetheart, Taylor Swift.
If you’d like to avoid the crowd at the ball drop, there are a vast number of events and parties you can attend. Madame Tussauds Wax Museum is already one of the city’s most popular attractions, but on NYE it becomes even more exciting when it hosts a party among its wax figures, letting you “party with the stars.” The party includes a 4-D cinema, an open bar, appetizers, and entertainment that is appropriate for guests of all ages. In the museum, you will have access to the viewing gallery on the 54th floor of the Hyatt Tower, which provides an excellent point-of-view of the ball drop. This will let you enjoy the iconic celebration far above the crowded streets. Bus tickets to New York City start for as little as $20.
Las Vegas is the only other city that can boast a New Year’s celebration as wild as New York’s. Celebrities love to join in the festivities here, so you could be sharing a champagne toast with one of your favorite stars! This year boasts some of the best live shows and concerts that Vegas has ever hosted. At the Chelsea, you can see the legendary Tony Bennett duet with the ever-inventive Lady Gaga. Listen to the greatest hits of Britney Spears as the pop-star performs at Planet Hollywood. For a laugh, check out Joel McHale, star of Community and host of The Soup, at the Mirage. Or perhaps, you want to ask the timeless question of “Turn Down for What?” with Lil Jon at Surrender Nightclub.
The point is, there are a near-endless amount of concerts, shows, and parties to choose from. Vegas is the place to be for NYE, baby! But don’t forget the best part: at midnight, the many casinos on the Las Vegas Strip host a synchronized fireworks display, illuminating the dark sky over the desert with a vibrant display of colors. Purchase your bus tickets to Las Vegas from Los Angeles now, for as little as $25.
On GotoBus.com, we can also help you book hotels (save even more when booking your bus tickets and hotel stay at the same time!), so you can focus on what is really important on New Year’s Eve: partying
