Have you had a horrifying Halloween traveling experience? No worries, we got you
It’s said that the unknown is the most frightening thing of all. Maybe that’s why traveling can be so nerve-racking, especially if you’re going somewhere you’ve never been before. It’s appropriate, then, that this weekend is Halloween, a holiday of ghosts and goblins, tricks and treats, and all-around terror. It’s celebrated in just about every city and town in the country, so there are literally thousands of things going on, no matter where you are. Lucky for you, GotoBus.com is here to take away some of the terror of traveling. One of the internet’s leading marketplaces for convenient, affordable bus routes all over the country, GotoBus can help you find the perfect destination for your next vacation. Below, we’ve compiled a list of haunted houses and other spooky attractions you can visit this Halloween.
Museum of Death, Hollywood, CA
What a pleasant name! This museum in Hollywood began as an art gallery in the 1990s, but soon evolved into the current collection. There’s still plenty of artwork, it just happens to be made by some of the most notorious serial killers in history. There are also old police photographs of some of the most famous crime scenes in history, such as the Manson Family and Black Dahlia murders. On the walls are videos of autopsies, serial killers, cult recruitments, and more. These are all real footage and not reenactments. There’s even a real severed head, because who doesn’t have one of those lying just lying around? Though there are no age restrictions, this museum is best for mature audiences since it has been known to make visitors feel more than a little uncomfortable.
Frightworld, Buffalo, NY
This award-winning “screampark” opens every year to gear up for Halloween. It features five different themed areas, including the new “Night Stalkers,” an interactive flashlight adventure that leads you into a dark basement where – surprise – your flashlight will start to die. Yikes! The other areas include “Condemned,” where you’ll try to escape through the woods from a deranged family wearing animal masks; “Eerie State Asylum,” an after-dark stroll through a psychiatric hospital; and “Insanity,” a group activity that promises to be “the most intense, high tech, mind boggling attraction you have yet to experience.” Sounds like fun, but maybe we’ll sit this one out.
Nightmare on 13th, Salt Lake City, UT
In the 25 years since its opening, Nightmare on 13th has become one of the country’s top haunted houses. It is built off the superstitious idea that buildings don’t have 13th floors, due to the bad luck associated with the number. Built in an old warehouse, Nightmare covers 36,000 square-feet. While you wait to enter, you will watch a fully animated show that provides you with an introduction. Once you’re inside, there are over 45 rooms to navigate, each full of its own, unique terror. Have fun!
Mutter Museum, Philadelphia, PA
The website of this medical museum in Philadelphia asks, “Are you ready to be disturbingly informed?” That’s quite the tagline! This museum definitely lives up to that promise, considered the finest medical history museum in the US. Although this museum has a clear purpose beyond shock and awe, there’s no denying just how creepy some of the exhibits are, such as the Soap Lady, a corpse that is covered by a fatty substance that forms on decomposing bodies in special, airless environments. Also on display are a collection of skulls, the skeleton of a 7’6″ man known as the “American Giant,” the conjoined liver of a pair of Siamese twins, and so many more, equally disgusting, yet informative, exhibits. Seriously – have you ever wanted to see a bunch of jars filled with organs? The Mutter’s got you covered!
Gates of Hell, Las Vegas, NV
Vegas’s Gates of Hell is just one of the components of the city’s Freakling Bros. Trilogy of Terror. On its official website, it is billed as “an experiment in serious, uncompromising, interactive horror.” It is the first R-rated horror attraction in the country, meaning you must be at least 17 years old, unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. Not much information is given in terms of what goes on once you’re inside, but it promises “a slow and painful descent into cold black nothingness to meet the Prince of Darkness himself.” Umm.. OK, why don’t you go first and we’ll guard the entrance.
Well, there you have it. Five of the most frightening attractions in the US, all in exciting cities that love to go all out for Halloween. On GotoBus.com, you can find bus routes to any of the above-mentioned locations, book tickets, and even book hotel stays, meaning you can enjoy your vacation and leave the scary parts to us. Happy haunting!
Now that schools around the country are starting to let out for the summer, you may only just be realizing that the 4th of July is about 2 weeks away! Crazy, right? Summer is the time to have some fun, travel, and visit your friends and family out of town. 4th of July is a long weekend, and it’s the perfect time to do just that. Visit GotoBus.com ASAP to book your bus tickets out of town for all of the holiday festivities before they sell out! Here are some fun suggestions to check out in some of the most popular cities around the country during America’s birthday weekend:
Since the 4th of July is such a patriotic holiday, we thought it would be a good idea to start in our nation’s capital, Washington, DC! And what better way to do that than with a 4th of July fireworks show? Weather permitting, the show begins at 9pm from the Reflecting Pool area of the Washington Monument, but thankfully, you will be able to be see the show throughout many areas of Washington DC and Virginia. The best viewing spots tend to fill up very quickly, so be sure to arrive early. For tips and tricks on additional viewing areas and important information on road closures, please be sure to visit the official National Park Service website.
Did you know that DC’s National Zoo has free admission? You didn’t read that wrong, we said FREE admission. We know our customers are on a budget, and visiting this historic zoo is the perfect activity to kill some time instead of your wallet! One of the oldest zoos in the United States, it’s fitting that it is housed in our nation’s capital. The National Zoo has an impressive collection of animals such as pandas, elephants, butterflies, Komodo Dragons, Bald Eagles, and much more. It was even home to the original Smokey the Bear (“Only YOU can prevent forest fires!”). For more information on the zoo’s hours and events happening throughout the summer, visit their website.
Bus tickets from New York to Washington DC start at just $21 one-way.
The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular is known worldwide for its annual July 4th collaboration with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. This year’s festivities begin early when the gates open at 9:00AM on the 4th, though the actual concert doesn’t start until 8:30PM that evening, so please plan accordingly. This year, the featured performer along with the Boston Pops will be the Boston Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps, the third oldest drum and bugle corps in the country. This is shaping up to be another Boston Pops show to remember! If you are not a fan of big crowds or cannot make it to Boston for the ceremony, you can still catch the entire show broadcast on TV instead. For more information on Boston’s 4th of July celebrations, please visit the following website.
The Lawn on D is a new, interactive, outdoor activity area in South Boston, something with a fresh perspective for Beantown. There are always different “pop-up” events happening here, geared toward people of all ages. From adult-sized swing sets to Friday Night Flicks (FREE movie nights where they show classics like Jaws; need we say more?), the Lawn on D has something for everyone! Be sure to “like” the venue’s page on Facebook and sign up for the e-mail list to stay up-to-date with the constantly changing events. For more information on this amazing and fun new feature in Boston, check out Lawn on D’s website. Trust us, this is something you need to check out this summer!
Prices for bus tickets from New York to Boston begin at only $18 per person one- way!
It looks like the place to be in Chicago for the 4th is the Navy Pier! Though you can see fireworks from this area twice a week, the show for Independence Day certainly promises to be an extra-special occasion. Synced to music, the fireworks will be displayed right above Lake Michigan and are scheduled to start at 9:30PM, but you will need to arrive early since a very large crowd is expected. If you would like to try something a little different and want to view the fireworks away from the crowds, be sure to check out the Navy Pier website, which also has information on taking fireworks cruises and fireworks tours!
Grant Park is a public park with more than 300 acres to explore, the perfect place to spend the day walking around or take time visiting one of its many features, including the Art Institute of Chicago, Millennium Park (where Cloud Gate, a.k.a. “the bean,” is located), Buckingham Fountain, the Skating Ribbon, Petrillo Music Shell, Maggie Daley Park, and much more! To learn more about all the features included within Grant Park, visit the official website for Chicago’s Park District.
Bus tickets from New York to Chicago start at only $40 per person each way… what a great deal!
New York, New York
Fourth of July wouldn’t seem complete without the annual fireworks show from Macy’s, and this year isn’t any different. Starting in 1976, the famous spectacle will once again be shown over the East River. There are many spots in The Big Apple to get a good view of the show, but you might want to get an early start to snag a spot. TimeOut New York has some great suggestions on the best places to view the fireworks, so you might want to check them out!
When we think of Coney Island, the first thing that comes to mind is usually the amusement park, but not for the 4th! On this day, something wonderful happens: a crowd gathers to witness the World-Famous Nathan’s International Hot Dog Eating Contest. Years ago, this contest started as a joke competition between some friends. Now, thousands of people watch this event in person, and it’s even broadcast live for the nation to see – truly considered one of the more bizarre “sporting” events of our time. Check out the event’s website for more information, including pictures and videos from past years.
You can grab bus tickets from Philadelphia to New York starting at just $12 a person – wow!
Las Vegas, Nevada
The great thing about Las Vegas is that since it’s the hub of entertainment 365 days a year, it won’t be difficult to find Independence Day celebrations in the area for the long holiday weekend. The Stratosphere Casino, Hotel & Tower will be setting off fireworks at 9:00PM, while Mandalay Bay’s celebrations not only include a fireworks display, but performances by the band 311 on July 3rd and July 4th. For more information on any of the 4th-themed events around Vegas, be sure to check out this website. As always, New York City will host its annual ball drop in Times Square, the largest New Year’s celebration in the world, which attracts an estimated one million spectators. From 6 PM to midnight, the streets are packed with people ready to turn the page to a new chapter in their lives, making resolutions for self-improvement, and seeking out that special someone for a New Year’s kiss. For decades, Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve will host live musical performances. This year will be hosted by Ryan Seacrest, and feature the boy band One Direction and America’s sweetheart, Taylor Swift.
If you’d like to avoid the crowd at the ball drop, there are a vast number of events and parties you can attend. Madame Tussauds Wax Museum is already one of the city’s most popular attractions, but on NYE it becomes even more exciting when it hosts a party among its wax figures, letting you “party with the stars.” The party includes a 4-D cinema, an open bar, appetizers, and entertainment that is appropriate for guests of all ages. In the museum, you will have access to the viewing gallery on the 54th floor of the Hyatt Tower, which provides an excellent point-of-view of the ball drop. This will let you enjoy the iconic celebration far above the crowded streets. Bus tickets to New York City start for as little as $20.
Las Vegas is the only other city that can boast a New Year’s celebration as wild as New York’s. Celebrities love to join in the festivities here, so you could be sharing a champagne toast with one of your favorite stars! This year boasts some of the best live shows and concerts that Vegas has ever hosted. At the Chelsea, you can see the legendary Tony Bennett duet with the ever-inventive Lady Gaga. Listen to the greatest hits of Britney Spears as the pop-star performs at Planet Hollywood. For a laugh, check out Joel McHale, star of Community and host of The Soup, at the Mirage. Or perhaps, you want to ask the timeless question of “Turn Down for What?” with Lil Jon at Surrender Nightclub.
The point is, there are a near-endless amount of concerts, shows, and parties to choose from. Vegas is the place to be for NYE, baby! But don’t forget the best part: at midnight, the many casinos on the Las Vegas Strip host a synchronized fireworks display, illuminating the dark sky over the desert with a vibrant display of colors. Purchase your bus tickets to Las Vegas from Los Angeles now, for as little as $25.
On GotoBus.com, we can also help you book hotels (save even more when booking your bus tickets and hotel stay at the same time!), so you can focus on what is really important on New Year’s Eve: partying
While many American holidays come packaged with visions of barbecues and beers with family and friends, only the Fourth of July brings to mind so clearly one word: FIREWORKS. Around the country, towns and cities will be lighting up the night sky with those festive explosives we all know and love.
In celebration of America’s birthday and the explosive fun that comes along with it, we’ve taken inventory of the firework shows in some of the largest US cities.
Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular – Boston, Massachusetts
This unique fireworks/classical music extravaganza is broadcast nationwide and has featured performances by those such as Neil Diamond and Martina McBride. This year, the show over the Charles River gets underway at 8:30pm and runs until 11:00pm. Get to the Esplanade early for a good seat, or just watch from afar in your favorite cozy spot on the river! Check out this video from last year’s spectacle:
Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks Live from the Brooklyn Bridge – New York, New York
Now in its 38th year, Macy’s annual explosive celebration is everything you’d expect a New York City party to be: big, loud, and bright! This star-studded event is hosted by Nick Cannon, and features performances by Enrique Iglesias, Lionel Richie, and Ariana Grande. The event is free to attend, with more than two miles of public viewing space along the Hudson cleared specially for the event. Things kick off at 8:00pm, though it’s recommended to arrive as early as possible for the best views.
Fireworks at the Navy Pier – Chicago, Illinois
Weirdly, the city of Chicago doesn’t have an official Independence Day display. Fortunately for those in the Windy City and surrounding areas, the Navy Pier has picked up the slack and now hosts an annual show (in addition to smaller fireworks shows throughout the summer). The big event starts at 9:30pm. For a unique twist on the experience, guests may want to look into taking one of the many fireworks cruises offered for a chance to see the fireworks from the water while enjoying a drink or even dinner!
Americafest at the Rose Bowl – Pasadena, California
Southern California’s biggest celebration takes place in Pasadena, CA, about 20 minutes outside central Los Angeles. For nearly a century, the Rose Bowl has hosted an Independence Day party like no other. This year, festivities get started at 2:00pm and run through 9:30pm. There will be motorcycle stunt shows, live musical performances, and, of course, the biggest fireworks show in SoCal. Tickets to the event start at about $17 per person for general admission.
Fun on the Fourth at the Stratosphere Hotel and Casino – Las Vegas, Nevada
From the top of the tower at the Stratosphere, visitors to Las Vegas will be able to see both the hotel’s own show as well as any other fireworks shows that might be going on in Vegas. Things open up at 6:00pm, and the celebrations also feature a concert and pool party (admission for the pool party is 21+). Admission to the Tower for the show is $10 for those staying at the hotel and $28 for non-hotel-guests.
